Manchester United 5 - 0 Wigan Athletic Highlights

Manchester United 5 - 0 Wigan Athletic Highlights

Having scored five in his last five matches against Wigan, Wayne Rooney continued his irresistible form at present applying a deft finish to Rafael’s right wing cross to put United ahead after 28 minutes. After breaking the deadlock United quickly doubled their advantage when a second attack down the hosts right, this time lead by Antonio Valencia, was comfortably tucked home on the cutback by Michael Carrick. Wigan were dead and buried at the break as young Brazilian fullback Rafael da Silva netted his first of the season spinning in the Latics boss and finding the bottom corner.

The match started to become a question of how many five minutes after the break as Valencia again broke down the right and his cross was nonchalantly stabbed home by Dimitar Berbatov. With fifteen minutes to go Antonio Valencia got his goal against his former employers, producing a delightful lifted finish from Rooney’s incisive through-ball.

Tottenham Hotspur 9 - 1 Wigan Athletic Highlights

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe scored five times to send his side back into the Champions League places as Harry Redknapp's men threatened to rack up double figures against Wigan at White Hart Lane.

Paul Scharner netted a consolation goal for Wigan, who had little chance of a victory with Defoe in such rampant form, with Aaron Lennon, Peter Crouch, David Bentley and Niko Kranjcar grabbing the other goals.

The match was played on a Sunday following an agreement between the clubs so players could rest after the international break - and Defoe seemed the freshest of the players on display by grabbing his goals in the second half.

Jermain Defoe's return to Tottenham from Portsmouth began badly as Wigan's Maynor Figueroa snatched a late winner.

The England striker, watched by national team manager Fabio Capello, did not have a single shot on goal as Spurs struggled to match their hosts' energy and invention.

In a match short on chances the breakthrough finally came in the 91st minute when left-back Figueroa headed home Ryan Taylor's corner.
