Aston Villa 1 - 2 Manchester United Highlights Carling Cup

The Carling Cup final got off to a blistering start, James Milner put Villa in front from the penalty spot after Vidic had fouled Agbonlahor after only four minutes. United responded nine minutes later, Michael Owen placing the ball into the corner for the equaliser.

Midway through the second half United took the lead as the deadly partnership of Antonio Valencia’s crosses from the left and Wayne Rooney’s heading ability saw the England striker loop an effort over Friedel and into the net.

An end-to-end battle between two teams looking at different ends of the table finished in a respectable stalemate between Villa and the Hammers. The hosts had the better of the chances, Rob Green pulling off a string of high quality saves, while struggling West Ham stayed competitive throughout the 90 minutes.

Aston Villa 0 - 1 Liverpool Highlights

In blizzard conditions at a freezing Villa Park, the weather clearly affected both sides in an underwhelming goalless first half although the Villains should have scored when Stuart Downing saw Pepe Reina stop a point-blank volley from four yards out.

For the majority of the second half Liverpool were hanging on by their fingernails as Villa squandered chance after chance to score, and they suffered the killer sucker-punch in the 92nd minute as Agbonlahor saw a tackle send the ball straight into Fernando Torres’ path, and the Spaniard gobbled up his chance and slipped a low shot past Friedel into the far corner.

Arsenal 3 - 0 Aston Villa Highlights

Arsenal 3 - 0 Aston Villa Highlights

Arsenal and Villa were nip/tuck throughout a highly competitive first half, which forced Wenger to introduce captain Fabregas ten minutes after the break. And it didn’t take long for the substitution to pay dividends as Cesc Fabregas curled a right-footed free-kick past Friedel in the 64th minute.

With Villa scrambling for an equaliser ten minutes from time Traore collected a loose ball before pinging a cross-field pass to Walcott who in turn threaded a pass forward to Cesc Fabregas to slide home his second of the match. Worryingly, the Arsenal captain was soon forced off with an injury picked up from his second goal. As the match ticked into injury time Abou Diaby picked up the ball in Villa’s half, advanced, and coolly curled home a killer third to thrust the Gunners right back in the title race.

But Craig Bellamy fired the equaliser on 67 minutes following good work by Emmanuel Adebayor who pulled the ball back from the right of goal.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez could have all three of his main injury worries available for Sunday's home game with Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Full-back Alvaro Arbeloa, who pulled out of last weekend's win at Manchester United with a hamstring problem, is back in training and is expected to return to the side.

Xabi Alonso (ankle) and Yossi Benayoun (hamstring), who both missed the Old Trafford triumph, are back in light training and have a good chance of being involved.

Benitez insists Liverpool must put the remarkable victory last week over Manchester United behind them and concentrate on not wasting the momentum.

The Liverpool chief maintains only a victory over a flagging Villa side will keep the feel-good factor going.
