A cheeky handball from Jamie Carragher while grounded in the Reds’ box was seen by the officials, allowing Keith Andrews to bring Rovers level from the spot. But then Anfield saw the sight they’ve been missing for much of the season as Fernando Torres was able to restored Liverpool’s lead from a neat Maxi pass.

Roman Pavlyuchenko cannot stop scoring, the Russian striker netted his fifth in a week, sliding in on a Defoe shot-cum cross after 11 minutes against Everton. Spurs’ second goal was one of realy quality, their three Croatians played keep ball down the right before Luka Modric saw his shot drift over Howard and go in off the bar.

Ten minutes into the second half, Aiyegbeni Yakubu pulled a goal back as the Tottenham defence, especially Gomes, failed to deal with a corner. Spurs held on as Everton dominated the second half and substitute Landon Donovan was guilty of a shocking miss that would have squared things up.

The Carling Cup final got off to a blistering start, James Milner put Villa in front from the penalty spot after Vidic had fouled Agbonlahor after only four minutes. United responded nine minutes later, Michael Owen placing the ball into the corner for the equaliser.

Midway through the second half United took the lead as the deadly partnership of Antonio Valencia’s crosses from the left and Wayne Rooney’s heading ability saw the England striker loop an effort over Friedel and into the net.
