Manchester United 5 - 0 Wigan Athletic Highlights

Manchester United 5 - 0 Wigan Athletic Highlights

Having scored five in his last five matches against Wigan, Wayne Rooney continued his irresistible form at present applying a deft finish to Rafael’s right wing cross to put United ahead after 28 minutes. After breaking the deadlock United quickly doubled their advantage when a second attack down the hosts right, this time lead by Antonio Valencia, was comfortably tucked home on the cutback by Michael Carrick. Wigan were dead and buried at the break as young Brazilian fullback Rafael da Silva netted his first of the season spinning in the Latics boss and finding the bottom corner.

The match started to become a question of how many five minutes after the break as Valencia again broke down the right and his cross was nonchalantly stabbed home by Dimitar Berbatov. With fifteen minutes to go Antonio Valencia got his goal against his former employers, producing a delightful lifted finish from Rooney’s incisive through-ball.

Aston Villa 0 - 1 Liverpool Highlights

Aston Villa 0 - 1 Liverpool Highlights

In blizzard conditions at a freezing Villa Park, the weather clearly affected both sides in an underwhelming goalless first half although the Villains should have scored when Stuart Downing saw Pepe Reina stop a point-blank volley from four yards out.

For the majority of the second half Liverpool were hanging on by their fingernails as Villa squandered chance after chance to score, and they suffered the killer sucker-punch in the 92nd minute as Agbonlahor saw a tackle send the ball straight into Fernando Torres’ path, and the Spaniard gobbled up his chance and slipped a low shot past Friedel into the far corner.

Chelsea 2 - 1 Fulham Highlights

Chelsea 2 - 1 Fulham Highlights

Chelsea’s downturn continued four minutes into the west London derby, as Fulham left-back Konchesky advanced unchallenged down the Blues’ right hand side and his cross was eventually hooked into the net by Zoltan Gera with the home defence all over the place. 20 minutes from time Chelsea hit back, sub Ivanovic whipped over a right-sided cross that Didier Drogba powered back across Schwarzer into corner.

Sadly for Fulham their game fell apart three minutes later, Kalou was allowed to advance down the right before flashing a ball across the six yard box, sub Sturridge picked up possession and saw his cross turned into his own net by the unlucky Chris Smalling.

Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 0 West Ham United Highlights

A fantastic start from Spurs in the London derby with the Hammers saw returning star Luca Modric score after 10 minutes, the Croatian started and finished a move that was crowned by Aaron Lennon showing off his unplayable pace down the right-hand side.

Spurs went on to control the match almost in its entirety, but it wasn’t until the final ten minutes that a counter-attack allowed Jermaine Defoe his chance to wallop in the Lilywhites’ second.

Hull City 1-3 Manchester United Highlights

Hull City 1-3 Manchester United Highlights

A fiercely fought opening 45 minutes at the KC Stadium saw an off-key Manchester United and a hungry Hull side both have numerous chances to break the deadlock. But the critical moment came with virtually the last kick of the half as Fletcher whipped in a cross from the right that Wayne Rooney poked over the line.

Expecting United to go on and win the match after the break, it was a case of self-sabotage just before the hour as a slack Rooney backpass was intercepted in a move that lead to Rafael pushing Altidore in the box, Craig Fagan converting the spot-kick to equalise. Parity lasted for less than 15 minutes and Rooney was at the heart of getting United back in front, the striker bursting down the inside right channel and seeing his cross turned into the net by Andy Dawson.

Arsenal 3 - 0 Aston Villa Highlights

Arsenal 3 - 0 Aston Villa Highlights

Arsenal and Villa were nip/tuck throughout a highly competitive first half, which forced Wenger to introduce captain Fabregas ten minutes after the break. And it didn’t take long for the substitution to pay dividends as Cesc Fabregas curled a right-footed free-kick past Friedel in the 64th minute.

With Villa scrambling for an equaliser ten minutes from time Traore collected a loose ball before pinging a cross-field pass to Walcott who in turn threaded a pass forward to Cesc Fabregas to slide home his second of the match. Worryingly, the Arsenal captain was soon forced off with an injury picked up from his second goal. As the match ticked into injury time Abou Diaby picked up the ball in Villa’s half, advanced, and coolly curled home a killer third to thrust the Gunners right back in the title race.
